This is the most current version of the Freedom of Information Act as of August 2009. The latest amendments were introduced in Public Law 110-175, passed December 31, 2007. Some amendments went into effect immediately, and some went into effect one year later (December 31, 2008).

Sec. 552. Public information; agency rules, opinions, orders, records, and proceedings

 

a) Each agency shall make available to the public information as follows:

(F) In denying a request for records, in whole or in part, an agency shall make a reasonable effort to estimate the volume of any requested matter the provision of which is denied, and shall provide any such estimate to the person making the request, unless providing such estimate would harm an interest protected by the exemption in subsection (b) pursuant to which the denial is made.
